Santa Cruz Junior Sailors Sweep the Podium in Tiburon

SANTA CRUZ, CA — The junior sailors of the Santa Cruz Yacht Club (SCYC) recently proved that their year-round training pays off, delivering a dominant performance at the Bay Area Youth Sailing (BAYS) competition hosted by the San Francisco Yacht Club in Tiburon. Despite the "tricky" and shifty wind conditions typical of the San Francisco Bay, the Santa Cruz team rose to the challenge, showcasing the technical skill and grit that has become a hallmark of the local program.

Dominance in the FJ Fleet

SCYC was well-represented across multiple classes, fielding one C420, four Flying Junior (FJ) two-handed sailboats, and an Optimist dinghy. The standout story of the regatta was the club’s overwhelming success in the FJ fleet, where Santa Cruz sailors claimed four of the top five spots.
A special congratulations goes to Jojoe Arthur and Caroline Caulfield, who secured 1st place in the FJ category through consistent maneuvers and tactical precision.

Winter Series Champions

As the final regatta of the Winter Series, the event concluded with the recognition of the season’s overall champions. The Santa Cruz Yacht Club’s excellence was on full display as the series titles were awarded:
Kilian Kesting (SCYC), sailing with Reuben Wax (SCYC) and Maxsun Geluardi (SFYC), took home the Overall Winter Series Championship.

Looking Ahead: An Expanded Summer Program

While these athletes train year-round to maintain their competitive edge, the Santa Cruz Yacht Club is now looking forward to its expanded summer program. Open to both new and seasoned sailors, this year’s program introduces a groundbreaking curriculum. For the first time, participants will engage in practical sailing training alongside integrated STEM modules, designed to teach the science, technology, engineering, and math behind the sport—from the physics of sail trim to the mechanics of buoyancy and marine ecology.
